Spain is positioning itself as the railway powerhouse chosen to transform transport infrastructure in Poland. With an investment of €32.2 billion, the Central European country is trusting Spanish companies to execute an ambitious project that should completely reconfigure its rail connectivity. The bet is clear: turning Poland into a key hub for mobility in Central Europe.

Why does Poland trust Spain?

The reason is simple: Spain is the world's second country in high-speed rail kilometres. That experience accumulated over decades of complex rail projects has made our companies the most sought-after when it comes to launching new transport infrastructure. As reported by xataka.com, Spain's Transport Ministry, under Óscar Puente's direction, has recently met with its Polish counterpart, Dariusz Klimczak, to coordinate Spanish companies' participation.

The ministerial meeting was attended by representatives of ten major Spanish companies: Adif, Renfe, Acciona, Aldesa, CAF, Elecnor, Idom, Indra, Lantania and Talgo. Each is seeking its place in a project of this scale, whether in construction, design, maintenance or the manufacture of the trains themselves.

The Port Polska project: connecting the country across 480 kilometres

The heart of this investment is Port Polska, an intermodal hub located on the outskirts of Warsaw that will integrate a new airport, road infrastructure and a high-speed rail network. The project involves building 480 kilometres of track connecting Poland's four largest cities: Warsaw, Łódź, Poznań and Wrocław.

Polish trains are designed to reach speeds of 350 km/h, although they will operate at a maximum of 320 km/h. This level of technology will align them with the most demanding European standards and allow the network to form part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the same plan driving projects such as the Madrid-Lisbon rail axis.

Ambitious timeline and Spanish companies in action

The deadlines are tight: the first section between Warsaw and Łódź should be operational by 2032, while the line will be fully operational by 2035. To achieve this, ACS, Acciona and Ferrovial lead separate consortiums bidding for the first package of construction investments.

But Spanish involvement goes further. Adif has renewed agreements to design, build and maintain the rail infrastructure, in addition to transferring knowledge to Poland. Ayesa will oversee a 17-kilometre stretch between Łódź and Breslavia. Ineco and Idom collaborate in network design and participate in airport IT services. Even Renfe, the state operator, already has a presence in Poland through agreements with local operators.

An unprecedented business opportunity

With €32.2 billion at stake and the need to build nearly half a thousand kilometres of rail infrastructure, this project represents one of the largest opportunities for Spanish industry in recent years. It is not only about securing construction contracts, but positioning our companies as providers of technology, knowledge and services in a European market that will continue to demand quality rail connectivity.
