Xiaomi solves smartphone overheating during charging with active cooling fan

Xiaomi has found an ingenious solution to one of the most pressing problems in modern smartphones: overheating during charging. The RedMagic K90 Ultra, recently presented by the Chinese firm, incorporates an integrated active fan that not only keeps the device cool while you play, but also manages the heat generated by the battery during the charging process. According to xataka.com, this approach marks a turning point in cooling high-end devices.

A waterproof fan with IP68 certification

Although Xiaomi was not the pioneer in incorporating fans into smartphones—models with active heat dissipation have existed for over five years—what truly stands out about the K90 Ultra is that it maintains IP68 certification for dust and water resistance. The fan has a diameter of 18.1 millimeters and operates through an independent, sealed air duct that manages both air intake and exhaust.

This system creates an air vortex that circulates through the device's chassis, moving approximately 0.42 CMF (cubic feet per minute) of air. At maximum performance mode, it achieves an internal temperature reduction of up to 10 degrees Celsius in just 100 seconds. The noise generated reaches 32 decibels, practically imperceptible in daily use, though more noticeable if you use it for gaming at night.

Heat-free charging: the real benefit

What is truly interesting is not just keeping the phone cool during gaming sessions, but what happens during charging. When you plug in the device, the battery generates considerable heat that, in traditional phones, accumulates inside. Xiaomi has engineered a system where the fan evacuates that internal heat simultaneously with the charging process.

This addresses two problems simultaneously: on one hand, it avoids the dreaded "thermal throttling," that automatic process where the processor reduces its performance when it reaches a critical temperature to protect itself. In summer, this problem is aggravated by external temperatures. On the other hand, it allows you to charge the device without the battery suffering the accelerated wear that excessive heat produces during the charging process.

Specifications worthy of a flagship

The RedMagic K90 Ultra is a formidable device beyond the cooling system. It features a Snapdragon 8 Ultra processor, a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with 3,500 nits maximum brightness, 165 Hz refresh rate and 3,500 Hz PWM to reduce flickering. The package is completed by an 8,550 mAh battery, symmetrical Bose speakers and Xiaomi's custom D2 graphics chip.

What is curious is that, despite these gaming phone specifications, the exterior design is discreet: according to xataka.com, it has the appearance of an iPhone 17 Pro without the apple, with no LED lights or disruptive elements characteristic of the gaming category.

A lesson for the traditional market

With temperatures becoming increasingly extreme and processors becoming more powerful, the question is inevitable: when will we see these active cooling systems in "normal" smartphones? Gaming manufacturers are already demonstrating that it is viable to maintain water resistance, premium design and active heat dissipation under the same chassis. Perhaps it is just a matter of time before this becomes standard in conventional flagships.
