Android without Play Store: the app turning GitHub into official store

The Digital Markets Act has forced Google and Apple to open their ecosystems to alternative stores, but most Android users still don't know how to access them. Now there is a surprisingly practical solution: RepoStore, an application that transforms GitHub, the developer platform, into a conventional app store where you can download and install apps with a single click.

How a store is born from GitHub

GitHub is a hidden treasure for those looking for alternative or open-source applications, but it was never designed as a marketplace. Finding an app there requires knowing its exact name and knowing how to navigate through technical repositories. RepoStore solves that problem ingeniously: it automatically tracks projects that publish APK files (Android installable packages) and organizes them into ordered sections.

As hipertextual.com reports, the application leverages GitHub's public search API to track repositories. It uses a scoring system that analyzes tags, programming language and description of each project, automatically generating thematic lists such as "Trending", "Recently Updated" or "Featured". It then verifies that each repository includes at least one downloadable APK file; if it doesn't, it simply discards it.

What do you need to use it?

RepoStore is free and open-source, distributed under MIT license. You can install it from three verified channels: F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid or directly from its repository on GitHub. The minimum requirement is Android 8.0 or higher.

An interesting feature is the ability to link your GitHub account via OAuth. If you do so, you will increase your API request limit from 60 to 5,000 per hour, allowing you to search much faster without restrictions.

Each app, a complete profile

Once installed, the interface works like any conventional store. When you select an application, you get technical information from the repository (number of stars, forks, languages used), the latest version notes and even screenshots. Everything you need to decide whether to download it or not.

Developers don't need to do anything special either. For their project to appear in RepoStore it only needs to meet three conditions: be a public repository, have at least one release that is not marked as a draft, and include an APK file. If they use tags like "android", "mobile" or "apk", their visibility will improve automatically.

A store without intermediaries (but with clear responsibilities)

Unlike the Play Store, RepoStore does not manage developers or charge them commissions. It is a pure organizational layer that catalogs what already exists on GitHub. That has one important consequence: the developer of RepoStore warns that responsibility for the security of each APK rests with whoever publishes it, not with the application distributing it.

This means you should download applications from known developers or those with a good verified repository track record. There is no security filter as exhaustive as Google's, but there are no intermediaries extracting profit either.

For Spanish users who want to escape the duopoly of official stores without complicating things, RepoStore offers a sensible path: direct access to open-source projects, without corporate censorship, but being aware of what that entails.
