Turkish actor conquers Spain after quietly winning over 40 countries
Murat Yildirim has been a familiar face across much of the world for years, but in Spain practically no one has seen him. At least until now. The Turkish actor, 47 years old, will soon arrive at Antena 3 as the lead in El secreto, the new series the private channel will premiere in place of Una nueva vida. But what is curious is that his international fame comes from long ago: from a drama that conquered more than 40 countries without Spaniards having the chance to see it on television.
The series that dominated the world (except here)
According to diezminutos.es, Yildirim became known worldwide thanks to Aşk ve Ceza —in Spanish, Amor y castigo— a production from 2010 with two seasons and 62 episodes that travelled across Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The series reached countries such as Peru, Panama, Paraguay, Bulgaria, Slovenia and the United Arab Emirates, but Spain was left off the television map. A surprising absence that has not prevented us from watching it today: it is available on YouTube, on dedicated channels that preserve the complete episodes with official Spanish dubbing.
A story of passion, secrets and revenge
The plot revolves around Yasemin, a young publicist who discovers her fiancé in bed with a work colleague. Devastated, that same night she gets drunk and ends up sleeping with Savaş, a waiter who is actually the son of one of the wealthiest families in Van. What begins as a casual encounter turns into a drama when Yasemin tries to flee the situation, but fate has other plans: the death of Savaş's brother and his father in a traffic accident changes everything. According to family traditions, Savaş must marry his brother's widow, which brings him face to face with his murky family business dealings and, inevitably, with Yasemin again.
An actor with unexpected roots
Born in Konya in 1979, Yildirim is much more than a pretty face on screen. He originally graduated in Mechanical Engineering, but his passion for music and theatre led him to change course. After minor roles, his first major international breakthrough came with the acclaimed series Asi (2007-2009), a production that was nominated at the prestigious Monte Carlo Television Festival. From there, he has starred in hard-hitting dramas such as Suskunlar, a harrowing crime drama, as well as action and political thriller productions like Ramo and Teşkilat, both high-budget ventures.
Spain's opportunity finally arrives
For those wanting to discover Yildirim before El secreto reaches Antena 3, Aşk ve Ceza is a great opportunity. It is the perfect chance to understand why this actor is so respected in the Turkish audiovisual industry and why he has captivated millions of viewers around the world for more than a decade. The question now is: will he be able to conquer Spanish audiences the same way he did the rest of the planet?
