Man sentenced to 20 years for murdering wife with 49 stab wounds

A sentence of 20 years in prison closes one of the most brutal cases of gender violence recorded in Almería in recent years. A man has been convicted of murdering his wife by inflicting 49 stab wounds on her while she slept defenceless in the family home in Roquetas de Mar.

The facts: a ruthless attack in the early morning

The crime took place on October 2, 2024 within the home shared by the couple. According to 20minutos.es, the attacker took advantage of his victim resting to carry out the attack with a kitchen knife. The brutality of the crime is evident in the distribution of the wounds: the head, neck, chest, back and limbs suffered multiple impacts.

This is a pattern of extreme violence that, unfortunately, is not isolated in Spain. The brutality of the method—repeated blows against a sleeping and defenceless person—underscores the premeditation and cowardly nature of the act, factors that have undoubtedly weighed on the court ruling.

A two-decade sentence that reflects the severity

The 20-year sentence represents one of the maximum penalties in cases of aggravated murder under Spanish criminal law. This duration is indicative that the court considered especially aggravating circumstances:

  • The broken relationship of trust between spouses
  • The victim's vulnerability at the time of the attack
  • The extreme violence of the method used
  • The victim's complete inability to defend herself

In the context of recent Spanish jurisprudence, sentences for murder in intimate partner contexts range between 15 and 25 years depending on concurrent aggravating factors. This sentence falls in the upper bracket, underlining the exceptional severity that judges have attributed to the facts.

Roquetas de Mar and the persistent problem of domestic violence

The Almería municipality, with just over 60,000 inhabitants, becomes once again the scene of a tragedy that highlights a national problem: gender violence that takes root within the four walls of the family home. Although details about any prior complaints or alerts regarding this couple have not yet emerged, data from the Interior Ministry shows that many of these crimes are preceded by earlier episodes of abuse.

Since 2003, Spain has registered over 1,000 deaths from gender violence according to official bodies. Most occur in intimate relationship contexts, and many of them could have been prevented with early intervention.

What happens now?

The convicted man will serve his sentence in the Spanish prison system. During his imprisonment, he will be periodically assessed to determine whether he meets the requirements for access to prison benefits such as leave or conditional release. The actual length of his time in prison will depend on how his behaviour evolves and on future judicial decisions regarding sentence reduction.

For the victim's relatives, this sentence represents, at least, judicial recognition of what occurred. But no sentence restores the life taken away nor repairs the damage inflicted on families who lose one of their own under these circumstances.
